Web Design FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: How much does a website cost?

A: For a detailed answer on website costs, click here.

Q: How long does it take to design a website?

A: The time necessary to design a website strictly depends on the complexity of the design and programming along with the amount of content that will be on the site. Consultation, input from your organization, review and testing are necessary to ensure even the simplest of websites will be effective. Incorporating marketing strategies into the design stages will also lengthen the project.

Q: Will my website be unavailable for any period of time while my site is being redesigned or moving servers?

A: During a redesign, your site should never be down. A separate development site will be used for the new design to allow your existing site to function normally until the new site is completed. Once the new site is finished, the transition from your old site to the new one is seamless. If you are moving to a new server or changing hosting accounts, your site should have little or no downtime as well although it may take time for the location of the new server (the network address) to be distributed across networks. This could result in temporary down time if not handled correctly.

Q: Why isn't my site showing up in the search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask.com, etc.)?

A: For a detailed explanation of search engine optimization, click here.

Q: Can I design my own website? Do I need to know HTML?

A: Yes and No. Although we don't recommend it, you can design your own website. You don't need to know HTML or any other programming language; however it helps if you do. You can use software like FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or even Word. You can also purchase premade web templates, or sign up for an online web design service that lets you customize your own website using a step-by-step wizard. In other words, the tools are available. You have scissors. You know how to use them. Should you give yourself a haircut? If you're ready to snip away, you will need to set up a get a domain name, set up a hosting account, and learn a little bit about how to upload and manage a website (e.g. FTP).

Q: What is a dynamic website?

A: A dynamic website is a website that uses a programming language and usually iinterfaces with a database to provide active elements, such as logins and database-driven content (e.g. product catalogs). Dynamic sites usually have an administrative type of "back end" where content can be added or managed rather than requiring that you edit each "static" HTML page.
